Yeah I'm a little behind on my postings, we've been so busy and finally now today have some time. We've been doing something everyday. The 4th of July was such a nice day here in WI, hot in the sun, but nice. We spent the afternoon at Riverside Park in Neenah, the place I remember going alot as a kid for 4th of July. Now days though, instead of the tiny little metal rocket ship we played on, they have this bigger than big, rocket ship playground. Kids had a "blast" on that stuff.
We had a picnic in the park with my grandparents too. Grandpa is still very weak, but improving and it was good to see them. They figure now that grandpa had a touch of the flu and pneumonia, and that all affected his heart. His blood is very thin and he is on medication yet for all of this, and continues to get blood tests to get everything regulated. Hopefully by the time they go back to AZ he is off all the meds he is taking for his heart etc. and eveything gets back to the way it should be.
They had a tons of activites for the kids to do there, blow up slides, obsticle courses, pony rides, we watched a water ski show, which would have been better if we could see, so many people. There was also the Wisconsin Singers, which is a bunch of college kids who sing and dance, from UW-Madison, but that we couldn't see well either. They have a big fountain in the park, that the kids played in, and they got soaked just before we were gonna leave. I ran into a friend of mine and her 2 young boys, which was a nice surprise, so we chatted while the kids played in the fountain.
We left the park then about 5pm, and headed over to DQ for some Archies famous popcorn, and on the 4th thay make it red white and blue. A must have....yum. We came home to let Lou out and feed him and give him some lovin. We then headed to Wil's parents house for a bbq supper (same as what we ate for lunch) :). We played ladder ball (ie: testicle toss) and then got ready a little after 8pm to go to Jefferson Park, (another childhood hot spot), to go get a spot to watch fireworks. We walked a few blocks to the park from Wil's parents house, so that was nice to be able to park there, instead of getting in all the traffic.
Kids were excited we found the perfect spot among the thousands of people for firework watching right above us....except after waiting around eating our red, white and blue popcorn for an hour.....kids were getting tired and antsy for the fireworks to start. Lisa and I were reminicing and giggling about the years we went to Pickerel for the 4th as kids, (by my grandparents who used to live up north). How up there there would be a firework in red, green or blue, every 10 minutes.
Well our memories were not too far off in good ole Menasha, as the first firework went off about 9:45pm we all cheered as we rushed to get settled in for the 1/2 hour or so of fireworks to come. That was it, oh wait, about 10 min later another one...we cheered again, then another one a few minutes later and then.....nothing. We waited for another 20 min or so, and still nothing. We were frustrated, kids were crabby and tired. What a way to end the 4th of July. So as many people got up to leave, we finally decided to as well. It was going on 10:30pm and still no fireworks. Neenah's fireworks at Riverside park, we could kinda see across the water and said we should a have just stayed there, and theirs were done and over by 10PM. We knew the wind had picked up a bit, so assumed that was the reason for the delay or cancellation or whatever, nobody knew what was going on...until we left.... and in the crowd of people walking to their cars, was a couple who was sitting up near where they were lighting them off, they were told along with several thousand people they had to move that they were too close to the fireworks because of the wind now it was more of a danger, and they weren't planning on doing anymore until all these people were moved. This couple left too thinking how are they gonna move all these people and still do the fireworks so late with many people having already left. As we were walking back to our car at Wil's parents house, they started the fireworks....which by now was about 10:45pm. We did get to see them standing on the sidewalk, on the corner of 5th and London St. from a distance thinking how cool they would have been from our spot underneath them.
It was amazing that the neighborhoods around there too had just as big fireworks shooting off from their driveways. Legal to buy, illeagal to set off without a permit, so hopefully they had permits, but they were fun to watch. Anyway, the kids were gonna sleep at Lisa's house that night, but with the fireworks so goofy and Hannah was tired and just wanted to go back to grandpa/ma's and Bailey still wanted to stay over so he went home with them.
